ADKAR Model and Nurses' Readiness for Change

Abstract

Background: Transformation is the greatest problem that all organizations face today.By the participation of people in the change projects, the possible resistance rate is reduced and the process of change is accelerated.The readiness of individuals makes them more involved in the change process.The current study aimed at investigating the readiness of using nursing Kardex through applying ADKAR Model by nurses working in hospitals affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences.Methods: current descriptive, cross sectional study was conducted on 320 nurses working in hospitals in Tehran, Iran.The subjects in each hospital were selected proportional to the size of the population, using convenient sampling method.Data were collected by demographic and ADKAR model questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics with SPSS V. 16.Results: Most of the subjects (95%) were female.The mean age of the subjects was 31.86 years with a mean working experience of 8.21 years.Moreover, 90% of the samples hold a bachelor's degree and most of them served as an official employee; 67.2% of nurses worked in university teaching hospitals and 32.8% in general hospitals.The results showed relative readiness of the nurses (more than half of the subjects got average score above 3 in all components) and the efficiency of the ADKAR model to assess their readiness. Conclusion:According to the results, it is recommended to increase the knowledge and ability of nurses to employ nursing Kardex, strengthen supportive factors, especially in non-educational hospitals, to make the changes, and increase the participation of nurses.
