A millimeter-wave antenna array with wide scanning angle is proposed in this paper. A square patch placed on a uniplanar compact electromagnetic band gap (UC-EBG) is used as the basic building block of an eight-element linear array. The array utilizes the in-phase reflection characteristic of UC-EBG to widen the pattern and the bandgap characteristic of it to improve the isolation. The range of the scanning angle at 26GHz is extended from ±62° to ±78° and the isolation between each element improved by about 3dB by the existence of the UC-EBG. The proposed UC-EBG structure extends the antenna array's spatial coverage, which is very attractive for millimeter-wave application.
