Abstract

Dicyclopentadienylmagnesium, Mg(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>)<sub>2</sub>,\nreacts with dimethyl sulfoxide, dmso, to afford the ionic\ncompound [Mg(dmso)<sub>6</sub>]<sup>2+</sup>[C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>]<sup>-</sup><sub>2</sub> with “naked” uncoordinated cyclopentadienyl rings; the reaction of Mg(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>)<sub>2</sub>\nwith tetrahydrofuran, thf, leads to the neutral complex\n[Mg(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(thf)<sub>2</sub>] with an η<sup>1</sup>- and η<sup>5</sup>-coordinated cyclopentadienyl ring.
