Abstract

This book chapter shares a conceptual model, TeachCS@CSS, that provides a framework for the implementation of a pilot teacher preparation model that integrates computational thinking (CT) and computer science (CS) throughout the undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs at The College of St. Scholastica (CSS). A critical component of this model is the unique and collaborative partnership between faculty from Education and Computer Information Systems (CIS) departments at The College of St. Scholastica. The primary aim of the TeachCS@CSS model is to create an interdisciplinary, sustainable curriculum strand that infuses computational thinking and computer science (CT/CS) so that all K–12 pre-service teachers have the knowledge and skills to teach CS through interdisciplinary or stand-alone approaches. Foundational to this work is a focus on equity with the hope that teacher candidates will become change agents able to champion “CS for All” in their schools. Additional aspects of the model are shared including the process to provide professional development to Education faculty as well as a developmental coaching model that supports curriculum development. The model includes a blended CT mini-course, scaffolded lessons in required education and content methods courses, and a field experience placement. Equally important is the work with key K12 school partners that support our teacher candidates. Program outcomes address knowledge in the areas of CT/CS content, curriculum, and pedagogy. An intentional lens of equity was used throughout the project with a focus on effective teacher dispositions to support equitable learning for all students.
