A tremendous progress has been made in the development of energy devices in recent decades. Nanotechnology boosted functional nanomaterials and made substantial improvements in the performance of energy devices. In particular, the development of smart nanomaterials has been emerged as a promising solution to tackle several drawbacks of energy devices, and the recently developed multifunctional, smart nanomaterials have been highly pursued to accelerate the development of smart energy devices. Energy applications, including energy production, conversion, efficient storage, and transportation, are dependent upon the properties of nanomaterials such as chemical, electrical, mechanical, electrocatalytic, and thermal. In this chapter, the development of multifunctional smart nanomaterials in energy devices is discussed from the perspective of energy applications. In addition, the key issues of energy devices, and major challenges and advantages caused by the use of nanomaterials are also included with possible remedies to tackle the challenges.
