CLASSIFYING THE READABILITY LEVEL OF READING TEXT ON ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED “PATHWAY TO ENGLISH”

Abstract

Reading is an activity that could not be separated from teaching and learning activities. It cause the textbook is one of source in learning. In this case, each reading texts hasdifferent difficulties, so it is important for teachers to choose appropriate texts for students so they wouldcomprehended the text. Based on the phenomenon, the researchers interested to conduct a study that aimed to classified the readability of reading texts on English textbook entitled "Pathway to English" for class XI for interest group. The researchers found 22 reading texts. This study used a descriptive research method with a quantitative approach. In calculating the readability level, the researchers used the Flesch Reading Ease formula (7 levels). The result of readability level analysis on reading texts showed that there were 6 categorizes of readability levels, namely;1. Easy, 2. Fairly easy, 3. Standard, 4. Fairly difficult, 5. Difficult and 6. Very difficult. The classification of reading texts were easy text (2), fairly easytext (2), standard text (7), fairly difficult text (6), difficulttext (4) and very difficult text (1).
