We have proposed an effective scheme of an optical switch based on the combination of two modified photonic crystal (PhC) arrays. Stretched fundamental oscillations were simultaneously excited at the frequencies near their band edges, inducing the coupler-like behaviors. The technology of multimode interferences was applied in the periodic couplers of low effective indexes for switching "ON" and "OFF" by proper phase modulation. The characteristics of ideal 3db splitting, high extinction ratio, high transfer efficiency, and tunable operating frequency make this system particularly appropriate for optical switches, combiners, splitters, or multiplexers. This technology provides a practical solution for beam steering in large-scale integrated optical circuits.
