An Ultra-Wideband and High-Efficiency Single-Sideband Time-Modulator With 2-bit Phase Shifter

Abstract

An ultra-wideband (UWB) single-sideband (SSB) time-modulator (TM) with high efficiency is proposed and verified. The proposed TM with one decade (10:1) operation band-width is achieved by utilizing an UWB 2-bit all-pass networks (APN) phase shifter. Four phase states of the proposed 2-bit phase shifter with maximum phase error of $\pm7.8^{\circ}$ over the entire bandwidth are switched in turn during each modulation period. Simulation results show that the power loss of the proposed TM is only 0.91 dB at maximum output power harmonic ($+1$ harmonic) with less undesired harmonics at the center frequency from 300 MHz to 3 GHz.
