Wideband Dual-polarized Patch Antenna for Wide-angle Scanning Phased Array

Abstract

A dual-polarized antenna with high isolation, low cross-polarization and low profile is proposed for wide-angle scanning phased array. Two individual resonant cavities for horizontal and vertical polarization are formed by metallic vias, feeding stripline and coupling slot on the same substrate. In addition, the main patch and the parasitic patch are placed above the coupling slots. Impedance matching bandwidth of 24% (1.1-1.4 GHz) is obtained by combining the substrate cavity mode and the patch mode. The radiating element is designed to scan ±45° in both azimuth and elevation with polarization isolation better than 30dB. Owing to the utilization of low-weight aramid honeycomb and thin stripline substrate, the antenna panel realizes a mass density of 3.5 kg/m 2 , which makes it suitable for L-band space-borne phased array radar applications.
