Design of a Millimeter-Wave High-Gain Wide-Angle Scanning Phased Array Antenna

Abstract

A two-dimensional wide-angle scanning phased array antenna working in Ka-band is proposed in this paper, which takes micro strip patch antenna as the unit. To improve the radiation efficiency, the antenna unit is designed to be L-probe proximity fed and the patch is printed on the undersurface of the substrate. With optimized design of the array antenna, an operating frequency from 34GHz to 36GHz is achieved, while the scanning angle ranges up to ±45 degree in both azimuth and elevation without large deviation in gain. Besides, the grating lobe is suppressed well within ±45 degree in E-plane pattern and H-plane pattern. The gain of the 16×16 array reaches up to 28.6dB.
