Millimeter-wave Wide-angle Scanning Phased Array Based on Heterogeneous Antenna Elements

Abstract

In this manuscript, a millimeter-wave wide-angle scanning phased array based on heterogeneous antenna elements is proposed. The array consists of two different types of magneto-electric (ME) dipole antennas with broadside and end-fire radiation direction respectively. In order to improve scanning performance, the two end-fire elements are arranged at the two sides of the 6 broadside elements, thus a 1×8 wide-angle scanning array is built. The proposed phased array using LTCC multi-layer integration technology so that it can be integrated on a single board. The distance between each element is 0.4λ 0 at 24GHz so as to suppress the side slob level during the whole scanning process. Decoupling structure is added between adjacent broadside elements to realize high isolation. The simulation result indicate that 10-dB impedance band of the proposed array can cover the band of 24 to 26GHz (8%) with the isolation higher than 22dB between adjacent elements. Moreover, the array can achieve a large scanning range of -75°~75° at 24GHz within 3dB gain drop, meanwhile keep the active S parameter lower than -9.5dB during the whole scanning range. Those results indicate that the proposed array is a competitive candidate in future millimeter-wave communication.
