A compact bandwidth enhanced monopole antenna for ultra-wideband applications

Abstract

A very simply designed compact coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna with bending in the lower edges of the square shaped patch and in the neighboring edges of the coplanar ground for the purpose of bandwidth enhancement is proposed in this article. This proposed antenna provides a wide impedance band from 3 to 15.4 GHz that has an improvement of more than 134%. The antenna also provides omnidirectional radiation pattern with a non-varying gain variation between 2-4.5 dBi and average radiation efficiency of more than 85% in its impedance band. The antenna has linear transfer function and flat group delay response in the 3.1-10.6 GHz unlicensed band which makes it well fitted for various UWB applications. The proposed antenna is fabricated on FR-4 epoxy substrate and the simulated and measured results of reflection coefficient are in good agreement.
