It is an intention of the present work, to analyze the challenges and the responsibilities of the teacher function on the base of an approach based on competitions. In the process reflection is generated on the new functions of the university teacher, there are described the characteristics of the company of information and of the company of knowledge, analyzing in turn the traditional education and the contemporary one; then there are described the contemporary functions of the university teacher as well as his profile of competitions linking it with the formative process and the promotion of the university teacher. One concludes that, it is necessary to construct a pedagogic model based on competitions that there emphasizes the generation of knowledge and technology between the educational agents; this approach stems in the formation of the students as well as in his teachers where the profile design is important. Likewise, it is necessary to emphasize that a program of formation and promotion of the university teacher must be based essentially on normative institutional documents that declare the educational, such ends as the educational and pedagogic institutional model, likewise it must be based also on the strategic plans that describe the practical implementation of the same ones; being constituted in important references to the production of the programs of formation and promotion of the teachers
