Dual Band Microstrip Patch Antenna with Secondary Patch

Abstract

In this paper, a compact microstrip patch antenna is reported having elliptical slot in patch and also a secondary patch connected to microstrip line. The proposed antenna is of size $20^{\ast}25^{\ast}1.6\ \mathbf{mm}^{3}$ with low cost commercially available FR4 dielectric substrate having 4.3 relative permittivity and loss tangent of 0.025. Bandwidth enhancement has been reported due to combine effect of rotating the patch and introduction of a secondary patch connected to microstrip line also taking into account the complex structure of the ground plane. Simulated results show the impedance bandwidth (S11 in $\mathbf{dB} < -10\ \mathbf{dB}$ ) of the proposed antenna is 2.5-4.3 GHz and 8.1-15 GHz. The peak gain of the proposed antenna is 2.69 dB in the lower band and 5.30 dB in upper band. The antenna finds application in 2.5/3.5 GHz WiMAX bands, X band (8–12 GHz), satellite communication, and other wireless communication services.
