Tratamiento del dolor en el anciano: analgésicos no opioides

Abstract

Painful conditions affect older adults. Consequently, there is a high prevalence of medication use among this population. Drugs without a strong evidence base and outside of recommendations are too often prescribed for elderly. Age-related physiological changes in distribution, metabolism, and elimination often alter the effects of pharmacotherapies in older adults. Comorbidities and concomitant medication should be considered when selecting an analgesic and dose regimen. Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most commonly used nonopioid analgesics. Caution should be exercised with these drugs in elderly.
