Abstract The structure of N-carboxy-γ-benzyl-l-glutamate anhydride has been determined by X-ray analysis. The crystal is orthorhombic; space group, P212121; Z=4 with a=7.766(1), b=27.470(4), and c=5.948(1) Å. The structure was deduced by the direct method and refined to a final R value of 0.057 for 1504 observed reflections by the block-diagonal least-squares method. The hydrogen bond is formed between the imino group and the carbonyl group of the side chain. The dimension of the five-membered ring is affected by the intermolecular hydrogen bond as compared with the crystal structures of the other N-carboxy anhydrides of α-amino acid.
