Design of low profile cylindrical luneburg lens antenna

Abstract

The design of a low profile, electrically large cylindrical Luneburg lens is presented. The lens is designed to have a focus away from its surface. A waveguide feed is designed for use in a 3×1 array feed for the lens. The H-plane beamwidth of the lens antenna is increased by capping the circular top and bottom of the lens with PEC disks. For this model, the 3dB E-and H- plane beamwidths are 1.5° and 21.4°, respectively. Its directivity at the centre frequency is 27.8 dBi, with an efficiency of 56.6%.
