Section Two. Muslim women in the history of South Asia

Abstract

This chapter contains selected sources on the lives of South Asian Muslim women. It presents sources related to studies of life of Muslim women of medieval India, Muslim women who were either rulers or wielded political power as wives and daughters of the ruling kings. Raziyya was the only female ruler in medieval Islamic India and 'her rule was a source of wonder to later Indo-Muslim historians. It also presents sources related to events of Raziya's life and rule, general history of the social life of the Imperial Mughals in India, information about their living conditions, dress and cosmetics, festivities and celebrations. It is not just a bibliography, it moves far beyond what a bibliography is ordinarily conceived to be.Keywords: bibliography; female ruler; medieval Islamic India; Mughals; Muslim women; Raziyya; South Asia
