Abstract

Magnolia dealbata Zuccarini (1836: 373). Type(lectotype, here designated):―[Icon] Magnolia dealbata in Zuccarini(1836:Tab.III,images available at http://www.biodiversitylibrary. org/page/11356529#page/408/mode/1up). Type (epitype here designated):― MEXICO. Oaxaca, s.d, Karwinski s.n. (M-0239898!, image of the lectotype available at http://plants. jstor.org/stable/10.5555/al.ap.specimen.m0239898). Nomenclatural notes: ―Zuccarini described Magnolia dealbata with a short diagnosis and a long, detailed description; the habitat and provenance were also provided: “ Crescit in imperi mexicani sylvis prope Rincou loci declivibus temeratis 2 ― 3000 pedes (= 600– 900 m.) supra Oceanum elevatis. ― Floret Februario, maturat fructus eodem mense anni sequntis ”. There were also two illustrations (“ Tab. III ”, and “ Tab. IV Fig. 1 ”) that are part of the original material; a morphological comparison with M. macrophylla was also given. We found a specimen at M (barcode 0239898) that is part of Zuccarini’s collection and bears one complete leaf and some petals and pieces of fruits. The plant was collected in Mexico, Oaxaca Province by K. von Karwinski, but the date of the collections is lacking. Thus, it cannot be considered with certainty as part of the original material (see Art. 9.3 of ICN). No other specimens have been found. Fortunately, Zuccarini (1803) provided two illustrations, Tab. III (a flowering branch) and Tab. IV (many details of the flower). We designate here Tab. III as the lectotype of the name Magnolia dealbata; Tab. IV remains a syntype (image available at http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/11356529#page/409/mode/1up). Specimen M-0239898 is here designated as the epitype.
