Buildings account for more than 40% of total energy consumption and 70% of the total electricity consumption in the United States. Among the energy consuming service systems in buildings, lighting systems and appliances together contribute to more than half of the electricity consumption in residential and commercial buildings. Significant contribution of lighting systems and appliances in total electricity consumption of buildings has ignited a growing worldwide interest to find strategies to improve energy efficiency of these service systems. Overall, these strategies follow two major approaches: (1) encouraging occupants to change their wasteful behavior by making them aware of their energy consumption behavior and potential energy savings
