The Open University UK offers modern languages courses by open and distance learning. 16-19 students may study at level 1 as part of YASS (Young Applicants in Schools scheme) which is aimed at school students who can benefit from independent study. This small-scale study investigates the pass rate for YASS students in London in 2006, and examines their situation, attitudes and study habits. Highlighted is how for school students, A-levels remain the main focus and to succeed in addition with an HE course, motivation and organised study habits are fundamental. A structured reminder system from familiar teachers within the school environment is a key factor. Where such guidance is embedded, a school may improve the chances of success for students who are not self-evidently already capable of independent study.\n\n\nKeywords: Gifted and Talented; KS5; Open and distance learning; Language learning strategies; Young learners in HE; Independent study
