In the US the Junior Red Cross movement started in 1917 during the First World War, and was established officially in 1922. It very soon became one of the most recognizable organizations in the world. Its main goals – promotion of health, work for community and international friendliness – were shared by many American children. The third goal – international friendliness – was conducted through exchanges of international correspondence and these exchanges were considered as an important way to create a world peace and international understanding. From the very beginning the American Junior Red Cross was the first in the world by the number of members. In the second half of the 1920s and the 1930s the American Junior Red Cross took a very active part in international cultural exchanges of correspondence. Hence, to understand the Junior Red Cross movement in the world it is essential to grasp distinctiveness of this movement in the United States. This research note explores the development of the American Junior Red Cross by focusing on membership and its distribution with the aim of trying to understand the real scale of the movement in the US.
