International humanitarian assistance in disaster situations

Abstract

Natural and man-made disasters huge losses for the victims and affected developing countries, the international community has always responded spontaneously and solidarity to assist the earthquake victims in the most critical stages providing medical care, food and shelter. This article reviews in particular the response of the United Nations system, the participation of the Pan American Health Organization in the earthquake in Pisco, Peru and the limitations and difficulties for effective humanitarian assistance.
