A compact, high-efficiency, high-power DC/DC converter

Abstract

A 10 kW (53 V/200 A), forced-air-cooled DC-DC power converter has been developed for fuel cell systems. This converter uses a new HV bipolar-mode static induction transistor (BSIT), a new driving method, a ZVS PWM technique and a new litz wire with low AC resistance. It weights only 16.5 kg, has a volume of 26,000 cm/sup 3/, operates at 40 kHz and has a power conversion efficiency of about 95%. The power loss of this converter been reduced by 20% with respect to a conventional natural-air-cooled DC-DC converter for a power density 3 times superior. >
