OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus within the next 10 years using the FINDRISC test.METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out among students at the Centro Universitario de Oriente who were enrolled in the Medicine and Surgery program and were aged 18 years or younger. The population was assessed with the FINDRISC questionnaire.RESULTS: The most frequent risk category was low risk 56.9%, followed by slightly elevated risk 27%, moderate risk 11.5%, and high risk 4.6%. Females predominated, representing 63.2% of the sample. A total of 66.1% reported a family history of diabetes, and 56.3% stated they did not consume fruits or vegetables daily. In addition, 47.1% reported not engaging in at least 30 minutes of physical activity during their free time; 34.5% had a BMI between 25 and 30, and 16.1% had a BMI greater than 30. Regarding waist circumference, among women, 13.8% had a waist of 80–88 cm and 13.2% greater than 88 cm; among men, 8% measured 94–102 cm and 6.3% exceeded 102 cm. Some 13.2% of students indicated having had elevated blood glucose levels at some point, and none reported taking antihypertensive medications.CONCLUSION: It was determined that 13.9% of the sample will develop type 2 diabetes mellitus by the year 2035
