Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NCM) Cathode Materials

Abstract

This chapter comprehensively explores the structural and electrochemical aspects of Li[NixCoyMn1−x−y]O2 (NCM) cathode materials, mainly focusing on the Ni-rich cathode variants. We spotlight the pivotal role of NCM-type cathodes in Li-ion batteries, highlighting their distinct advantages. The discourse explores the diverse facets of NCM, including its origin, crystal structure, and the nuances in its composition and electrochemical stability. We meticulously examine the various crystallographic phases, tracing their transitions from raw powder to different electrochemical stages. We also comprehensively describe the specific phases that play a role in the performance of layered-type NCM cathodes. The relationship between synthesis techniques and electrochemical behavior is briefly discussed. Furthermore, we detail the latest advancements, potential applications, and the road to commercialization for NCM cathodes while also addressing the challenges ahead and prospective future avenues. The chapter emphasizes the importance of striking a balance in performance attributes when crafting cutting-edge NCM cathodes for Li-ion batteries.
