Abstract

The photovoice method is a qualitative research technique. Its fundamental objective is to empower individuals to articulate their experiences and perspectives, thereby facilitating dialogue and promoting social transformation through the medium of photographs. The method was first introduced by Wang and Burris in 1997, and it has since gained popularity in health sciences disciplines. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the method. The method is founded on nine sequential steps. Despite its flexibility and adaptability, the method poses ethical and methodological challenges, such as ensuring the active participation of the community and properly managing the process of obtaining and using the images. Furthermore, its implementation with children introduces additional challenges that must be addressed. The method has been used in clinical and educational settings, as its use in academic training and research can contribute to more empathetic and person-centered care.
