Dropping out of school can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as academic difficulties, lack of motivation, personal problems, lack of family support or lack of financial resources. Understanding these factors is crucial to developing effective student retention strategies and promoting successful college completion. In this context, the present study aimed to know the relationship between academic performance and school dropout in university students in southern Sonora. The sample consisted of 120 students of social sciences and administrative sciences from a public university, selected in a non-probabilistic manner. The instrument used was the Questionnaire for university students designed by Artunduaga (2004), which consists of 66 questions, both open and closed, in order to identify the factors that affect academic performance and student dropout. The study followed a quantitative approach and a non-probabilistic correlational design. The data collected through the questionnaire was analyzed using IBM SPSS V. 26 software, applying descriptive statistics to obtain a detailed understanding of the results. It is concluded that there is a weak correlation between academic performance and school dropout; however, good academic performance can be a protective factor against other influences that support dropout.
