Abstract

The article aims to analyze how the guiding principles on business and human rights can be incorporated into renewable energy companies in order to promote a sustainable, socially and economically secure environment for the energy transition. First, the context of renewable energy companies in the Latin American market, their regulatory opportunities and their investment potential are analyzed. Secondly, possible behaviors that constitute human rights violations by renewable energy companies are identified. Finally, it assesses how renewable energy companies can properly apply the guiding principles on business and human rights. It is concluded that these companies can, in addition to applying laws aimed at respecting human rights, adopt and promote policies that include community consultation processes, training of managers and various dialogue processes between workers, businessmen and communities, also including spaces for accountability. Additionally, actual and potential impacts on human rights should be assessed, the results of impact assessments integrated into internal processes, and the implementation of responses monitored to ensure that impacts are effectively addressed.
