Abstract

CIoT brings new options for the connections of things and the processing of data which has never been seen before. Although there are the availability and cost advantages, heterogeneous devices and networks create problems in terms of identity and security. These issues have raised new concerns on the implementation of different identity models due to the centralized nature of most of the identity services that accompany the implementation of the new models. Chapter four delves into how blockchain can be used to ensure secure communication of CIoT, using edge computing as a thrust. The topics falling within the scope of this chapter include architecture and design, consensus algorithms, and smart contracts. It also introduces the edge computing starting from the fundamental concept and stressing on benefits over the cloud computing, and discuss how blockchain can improve data handling and security in edge networks. However, there are issues that are associated with the integration of the blockchain with the edge computing these include; scalability, latency, performance, and compatibility. Thus, this chapter will deliver the detailed comprehensive analysis of how the applied blockchain can meet the above-mentioned challenges to improve the CIoT systems' security and performance. It will also discuss scenarios of applying blockchain for solutions based on edge computing as the case studies. From this point of discussion, the chapter shall provide real-world prospects of blockchain application in the context of CIoT, which shall comprise of increased reliability and accuracy, as well as an increase in security and efficiency in the adoption of identity systems. Thus, it will also cover future development, advancements in technologies and possible research areas to overcome the existing issues and to harness the possibilities of blockchain technology in the envisage growth of CIoT security and features.
