This article investigates the importance of strategic planning for small businesses, focusing on the application of the SWOT matrix. The research carried out a literature review to understand how the lack of strategic planning affects the sustainability and success of these companies. The results show that many small companies do not use formalized strategic planning, with around 80% of them not applying structured practices. The lack of knowledge and the high mortality rate in the first five years are significant challenges, which could be reduced by using the SWOT matrix, a crucial tool for strategic analysis that is little known among these companies. The research confirms that the absence of strategic planning, especially with the use of the SWOT matrix, is associated with a higher probability of bankruptcy. The study highlights the need to adopt strategic planning in order to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of small businesses. It is also suggested that on-site studies be carried out to explore in more detail the barriers to and effectiveness of strategic planning in small businesses.
