Coaching chatbots are increasingly used to scale and democratise coaching due to their cost-effectiveness and 24/7 availability. From humble beginnings as simplistic, scripted conversation agents, coaching chatbots continue to grow in sophistication and complexity, and are able to rival human coaches in certain scenarios. To successfully create and deploy a coaching chatbot it is important to understand how to design one, which factors play a role in user adoption and importantly in which use cases they are effective. There are also numerous ethical challenges that must be considered. This chapter reviews research to shed light on the intricacies of coaching chatbots.
