This book collects the essaysresulting from contributions of renowned experts on sustainable development andenvironmental democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Its contentconsists of five parts with fourteen articles that provide differentperspectives of the Escazú Agreement within the framework of five areas ofcritical importance for humanity and the planet of the 2030 Agenda forSustainable Development known as the five Ps: people, planet, prosperity,peace, and partnership. For the United Nations Economic Commission for LatinAmerica and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Faculty of Jurisprudence of theUniversidad del Rosario, the Escazú Agreement represents a valuable andunprecedented opportunity for the region not only to strengthen democracy,human rights, and environmental protection but also to fulfill the mostsignificant global agenda of our time: sustainable development. We hope thatthese reflections contribute to the elaboration of better policies and legaland institutional frameworks regarding access to information, publicparticipation, justice in environmental matters, and the protection ofenvironmental defenders in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
