Compact Circularly polarized MIMO dielectric resonator antenna for complete X-Band Coverage

Abstract

This research paper presents a MIMO Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) designed for X-band communication. The antenna operates in the 8-12 GHz frequency range and exhibits circular polarization with a wideband characteristic. High isolation, below -20dB, is achieved across the entire band through the introduction of a ground plane defect. The DRA consists of two stacked discs, where the upper disc is perforated and rotated to generate orthogonal modes. An air gap between the discs improves impedance bandwidth. The antenna is fed using orthogonal microstrip lines with conformal strips. Performance evaluation reveals a 25 % bandwidth with complete overlap of the 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The proposed MIMO configuration offers a realized gain of 7.7 dBi to 8.6 dBi in the entire X-band. The efficiency is measured and observed above 90 % for the entire band. The proposed MIMO DRA offers advantages such as high isolation, wide bandwidth, and circular polarization, making it suitable for X-band communication applications.
