Functionalization and Characterization of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract

In nanotechnology, carbon nanotubes have stimulated great research efforts, mainly due to their spectacular properties. Employing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in different commercial and scientific applications, functionalization with different organic and inorganic compounds is required. In addition, functionalization (covalent and non-covalent) is a common method to increase the solubility and improve the selectivity of CNTs. Finally, CNTs need to be carefully characterized using techniques such as TEM/SEM, XPS, FTIR, NEXAFS, TPD, NMR, TPR, chemical derivatization, and Raman spectroscopy. This chapter aims to provide a critical review of recent developments in the functionalization of CNTs and their application.
