Abstract

Reduction of oxygen plays a crucial role in energy-converting systems, like fuel cells, metal-air batteries, etc. Based on the nature of reaction medium, ORR mechanism follows two pathways: (i) direct 4e– transfer (ii) 2e– transfer via formation of H2 O2 . In addition to these two, there is a possibility of 1e– transfer pathway from O2 to superoxide (O2 –) in non-aqueous medium.
