BOOK-CHAPTER

Artificial intelligence and blockchain-assisted projects and synergies for telehealth systems

Abstract

Telehealth systems have continued to play vital roles in improving access to medical care. With the increased deployment of telehealth, congestion and waiting times in hospitals have reportedly reduced. The centralized nature of conventional telehealth systems poses security threats to patients' records and often restricts them from taking charge of their data. In order to address these concerns, blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) can be harnessed for enhanced security, flexibility, transparency, and provenness in telehealth. This chapter discusses AI and blockchain technology-enabled projects' synergies for telehealth systems. Related studies on using AI and blockchain technology in telehealth systems were reviewed. The chapter revealed tools and approaches for creating synergies between AI and blockchain technology. Selected AI and blockchain-enabled projects in telehealth specifically, MedCredits, MedChain, BlockHeal, and MyHealthMyData were lucidly presented. Strengthening the synergies between AI and blockchain technology in telehealth will significantly engender the trust of patients and clinicians. The future holds great prospects for revolutionizing the practice of telehealth.
