Abstract

A shared-radiator wideband grounded patch antenna pair with a bending slot operating in the wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) frequency band for mobile terminals is proposed. Two sets of rectangular slots are first cut on the complete shared-radiator grounded patch antenna pair to reduce the resonant frequencies of the TM0.5,0 and TM0.5,1 modes and pull them together to cover the desired 5 GHz Wi-Fi band (5.15–5.85 GHz) within a compact dimension of only $14.5\times 14.5\times2$ mm3. Based on the decoupling principle of the electrical coupling and magnetic coupling cancellation, a bending slot is introduced to adjust the electrical and magnetic coupling strengths, thereby increasing the simulated isolation from only greater than 5.3 dB to greater than 12 dB. To demonstrate the engineering utility of the proposed antenna pair, a $4\times4$ MIMO antenna with two antenna pairs integrated directly with the terminal chassis ground is presented and analyzed. The proposed antenna pair and the $4\times4$ MIMO antenna were fabricated and measured, and the experimental results are acceptable. With the advantages of zero clearance, small size, wide bandwidth, high isolation, and direct integration reliability, the proposed antenna pair has excellent application potential in mobile terminals.
