Underwater Long Distance Wireless Optical Communication System With Large Divergence Angle

Abstract

This paper implements an underwater wireless optical communication real-time transmission system based on 520nm LED array and PMT reception with complete software and hardware implementation. The luminous power of the transmitter is 4.41 W with a divergence angle of 6 degrees and the receiver sensitivity is -55dBm. Through experiments in a test pool, the communication performance of the system has been verified to be as long as 188.9 m in pure water in communication distances and 5Mbps in communication rate and the BER less than 10 −5 . The relatively good result shows that a system adopting LED and PMT detection is promising for large-coverage and long-distance underwater optical communication.
