Evolution of wireless communication standard till 4G was majorly focused on improving data rates, but number of devices which are getting connected with internet to fulfill the smart requirements are increasing very rapidly in last few years. There is a need to handle the data generated by these devices, efficiently by wireless network which itself needs to be faster as well as efficient in terms of resource management such as spectrum and energy. Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN), New Radio (NR) abbreviated as 5G, is a telecommunication standard which is proposed to satisfy the demand of communication for latest era. Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture for 5G is based on central processing with real time cloud computing structure. It helps in improving spectral efficiency as well as the energy efficiency of the network. In this paper a survey of resource allocation with C-RAN for improvement in energy efficiency of the network is presented. Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), architecture, advantages, and challenges for energy efficient cellular wireless network with the references of seminal work and available literature is presented. Comparative study of algorithms mentioned in seminal work reports improvement in network energy efficiency with increase in the fronthaul capacity & significant increase in energy efficiency with the transmit power.
