Abstract

Abstract The region bounded by the lower courses of the rivers Strymon and Nestos consists of two extensively marshy plains, well watered by the river Strymon and by its tributary, the Angites, dominated by imposing richly wooded mountains—Mt. Pangaion to the south-west, Mt. Lekane to the east, Mt. Kerkine and the Rhodope range to the north. A third plain, rich in agricultural lands, extends between Mt. Pangaion and Mt. Symbolon to the south-east. The latter mountain range and Mt. Lekane further north-east together define a narrow coastal strip, whose easternmost part was considerably extended through the centuries by the massive alluvial deposits of the river Nestos.
