Absorption- and Reflection-Dominated Materials for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Applications

Abstract

Recent research work has focused on the search for efficient materials for shielding devices from electromagnetic interference (EMI). The increased levels of EMI from electronic appliances not only affect the performance of electronic devices but also affect the function of living organisms. Therefore, it is very important to develop an efficient material for shielding electromagnetic radiation. Apart from other materials, nanomaterials with excellent physicochemical properties, low density, flexibility, ease of manufacture, and cost-effectiveness have become potential materials for shielding electromagnetic radiation. In this chapter, various materials like metals, conducting plastics, and conducting polymers that are used in the shielding of electromagnetic interference will be discussed. For the benefit of readers, this chapter begins by discussing the need for and absorption- and reflection-based materials in EMI shielding. Moreover, this chapter will emphasize future research directions to overcome the present technical issues.
