Abstract

With rapid economic growth and urbanization, more and more sewage treatment plants are being built around the world, resulting in the large production of excess sewage sludge. Because it is an organic solid waste, the safe and proper treatment of sewage sludge has become a difficult issue in the sewage treatment industry. The combustion method has proven to be an effective technique for sludge reduction and to render it harmless. This chapter introduces the generation and basic composition of sludge, the factors and mechanisms affecting sewage sludge combustion treatment, the equipment used in sewage sludge incineration, and the pollution control measures used during the combustion process. It also highlights the development of sewage sludge combustion treatment.
