Physical and Chemical Vapour Deposition Coatings

Abstract

Physical vapour deposition (PVD) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) are two advanced coating techniques used to enhance the properties of magnesium. PVD involves the physical deposition of a thin film onto the surface of the magnesium, while CVD utilizes a chemical reaction to deposit the film. Recent advances in PVD and CVD coating of magnesium include the development of new coatings that improve the corrosion and wear resistance of magnesium alloys. Additionally, the development of multilayer coatings has allowed for the creation of coatings with improved properties, such as increased hardness and toughness. Another important area of progress has been in the optimization of the PVD and CVD processes themselves. Researchers have been able to improve the efficiency and quality of the coatings by optimizing the parameters of the processes, such as the deposition rate, temperature, etc. Furthermore, the development of advanced equipment has allowed for the coating of complex shapes and large surfaces, which is a major advantage in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries. Future research in this area is driven by the need for advanced functional coatings that are cost-effective, efficient, sustainable, and environmentally benign.
