Low-profile Dielectric Resonator Antenna with Wide Beamwidths

Abstract

A laterally radiating dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with wide beamwidth is proposed. By superimposing two modes which radiate like an electric and a magnetic dipole, the DRA radiates along the x direction with a wide beam. The proposed DRA can achieve a half-space radiation coverage by using single antenna element. The simulated results show that the impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 3.17-3.73GHz (~16%). At 3.5GHz, the overlapping half-power beamwidth of the xy and xz plane can be up to 176°. A high front-to-back ratio (FTBR) of 19.69 is also observed. Furthermore, the DRA has a low profile of 0.136λ0.
