Wireless sensor networks are gaining immense popularity in different fields such as military, environmental monitoring, smart home, and smart city. Sensor nodes are deployed to sense data from the surroundings and communicate to base stations over wireless mediums. Each node requires more energy to forward the data directly to the base station. Clustering is one of the approaches which reduce the energy consumption of nodes in the network thus enhancing network lifetime. Various techniques are deployed for clustering in WSN. In this paper, clustering based on chicken swarm optimization is modified to raise the energy efficiency in WSN. Multiple cluster heads are selected to perform data aggregation and data transmission. Simulation results show that an Energy-Efficient CSO (EE-CSO) mechanism balances the energy utilization of sensor nodes thus improving network lifetime.
