Volume-Efficient Miura-Ori Reflectarray Antenna for SmallSat Applications

Abstract

In this paper, a deployable Reflectarray Antenna (RA) operating in K a -band (38 GHz) is presented. A 80x80x25 mm 3 foldable RA, based on a Volume Efficient Miura-Ori Origami (VEMO) folding pattern, is developed to achieve high gain (36.1 dBi) and high volume packing efficiency (97.5%). The RA stows into a cuboid whose volume occupies just 16% of a 1U CubeSat. In its deployed state, the aperture produces a pencil beam with -18 dB side lobe level and 52.5% aperture efficiency.
