Graphene-Elastomer Nanocomposites for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding Applications

Abstract

The reduction of electromagnetic pollution is becoming a serious concern of the modern civilization which arises due to the extensive exploitation of electronic devices. The development of innovative high-performance electromagnetic interference shields is of critical importance to attenuate electromagnetic wave energy, to ensure smooth functioning of electronic systems, and to protect environment and human health as well. Recently, the emergence of new generation materials graphene-elastomer nanocomposites has replaced the metal-based shielding materials due to their inimitable advantages such as high aspect ratio, lightweight, resistance to corrosion, super electrical & thermal conductivity, economic feasibility, broad bandwidth properties as well as exceptional electrical, dielectric, mechanical & magnetic properties as compared to the conventional metal-based materials. This chapter aims to summarize the current research progress in conductive graphene-based elastomer nanocomposites till date in the context of their potential implementation in electromagnetic interference shielding. In addition, a brief overview of shielding phenomenon, a comprehensive description of the developing role of graphene as microwave shield, and the synthesis methods of graphene-elastomer nanocomposites for shielding applications are outlined. Finally, the key issues to be challenged and perspectives for the future development are also highlighted in this chapter in order to guide future progress in the development of more promising, scalable and affordable shielding materials.
