Electrospun Bio Nanofibers for Energy Storage Applications

Abstract

Attaining a secure and viable energy future is one of the supreme scientific and societal challenges currently in existence. Due to the increase in population and the lack of fossil fuels, the global demand for energy is increasing rapidly. To resolve these issues, scientists have been developing smart energy harvesting and energy storage technologies. Among them, high density energy storage technologies have gained considerable attention. Several forms of novel sustainable energy storage devices such as solar cells, fuel cells, lithium ion-batteries, and supercapacitors have been reported so far. These energy storage devices developed from smart nanomaterials possess comparatively better performance and efficiency. Among these nanomaterial based energy storage devices, bio-mass derived nanofiber based energy storage systems have gained significant attention because of their excellent electrochemical performance, stability, and cost effectiveness. This chapter discusses the need, advantages and development of biomass derived electrospun nanofiber based materials for energy storage applications.
