Integrating 1D and 2D hydrodynamic models for semi-arid river basin flood simulation

Abstract

The Banas River basin of India experienced a devastating flood in 2017 because of the occurrence of the maximum rainfall of the past 112 years. The Dantiwada and Sipu dams on the Banas River and a tributary of Banas River received unprecedented inflow, which forced dam authorities to release a huge discharge in a short duration, causing the disaster. The cross-drainage work of the Narmada main contour canal was not sufficient to pass the amount of floodwater, which aggravated the flood condition of the surrounding region. To assess this flood, simulation work was performed using the one-dimensional-two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic model by using MIKE Flood. The simulated flood depths were compared with actual flood depths obtained using a questionnaire survey at more than 30 villages. The results of the present study can be useful for canal authorities and people from flood-affected villages to take necessary flood preventive measures.
